Drones in various forms have become an increasingly decisive tool during the war in Ukraine for solving tasks that initially largely consisted of reconnaissance. Gradually, they have increasingly come to perform more and more offensive, pure attack missions to eliminate both enemy equipment and personnel. Ukraine's Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyj stated in February that 66% of Russian losses in terms of equipment and vehicles were caused by drones during January 2025. The vast majority of these Russian losses were caused by so-called First-Person View (FPV) drones, accounting for 49% of total Russian losses. These drones are kamikaze drones as they are destroyed when they hit the target or possibly another object that gets in their way.
Together with multi-use drones that are often used to drop bombs, these are now indispensable systems and drones also have a long range of other applications such as evacuation of wounded and mine laying.
Russia plans, according to Ukrainian intelligence reports, to establish 277 different drone units with a total of 210,000 personnel in the form of drone pilots and support staff by 2030. Drones are therefore an indispensable part of modern warfare that is here to stay.
